There are various types of additional buildings that serve to add beautify and outdoor functionality, especially the home garden. Eg patio, porch, pergola, gazebo, arbor, deck, and others. Each name has different definitions and functions. There are integrated with the main house, there is also a separate from the main house. So let's learn each outdoor structures and buildings and its function.
Patio comes from the Spanish word which refers to a yard adjoining a house without a roof and usually uses floor pavements. Over time, in the use of english term, patio describes the gathering area behind the house and integrated with the back door of the house. Patio is used as a place to relax and conversation area while enjoying the fresh air.
With growing necessity, the patio is given a roof to protect from the rain and the sun. We can call it patio cover, patio overhang, and sometimes some people associate it with pergola.
Porch taken from the old French word "porche", is a relaxing area located on the outer side of the main house. Porch is the front of the house before the entrance door, has a roof, and the extent is enough to put the tables and chairs to relax. Roof area extends as wide as porch floor with support columns on one side. Porch usually has no walls on the outer side. Porch function as a place to relax while enjoying the outside scenery. Sometimes porch is also referred to as veranda or loggia.
PATIO WITH ROOF
Sometimes people prefer to do outdoor activities in the backyard, then the use of a roof on the patio is required to be protected from the weather. Patio cover is an additional structure to provide shade from the rain and the sun. Patio covers may have a solid roof or open roof, can be patio overhang (without support columns) or with support columns. The roof of the patio cover can be associated with a pergola.

Traditionally the gazebo features railings and balusters, and is not in contact with the main house. Some people may be confused by the difference between the pergola and the gazebo.
Arbor is a small framework designed to support climbing trees or vines, with an open roof, and has at least four columns or posts as support. Arbor is placed in the entrance or the gate. The basic difference between pergola and arbor is its location. If the arbor is placed as an entrance or exit way decoration, then the pergola is placed in the pathway area.
Trellis is a framework or lattice work made of wood, bamboo or metal bar that is useful as support for climbing trees. Trellis usually consists of two posts. They can also be used as an additional decoration on an empty exterior wall. Trellis is commonly used in vegetable gardens, which serve as a vegetable support buffer that is not strong enough to stand on its own.
